I’ve questioned it all, and I’ve wondered what drives people to do what they do. It’s extremely easy to judge and even if you feel sorry for someone, you may not be giving them the respect they deserve.
And maybe there are people who it is truly impossible to empathize with, but before you decide you’re better than someone, before you insult or look down on someone, look at yourself. None of us is perfect, and we’ve all made mistakes that we never thought we would. Even the nicest people will surprise you. But that’s okay. It is really okay.
The message has been with us since we were children, if not preached by our elders, then by our cartoons. If you judge others without really stepping into their shoes, you’re only breeding prejudice and a cycle of ignorance. But it seems people are so easy to forget and the minute someone makes a mistake or does something “unforgivable” they are socially bludgeoned until they are pushed into an even worse emotional state.
If someone hurts you, then by all means, stay away from them if that’s what you need to do, but don’t sit there festering over what they did to you. Just keep moving on with your life and doing what you do, because no one should have the power to stop you. You don’t have to understand them. You don’t have to relate. You just have to accept that what’s done is done.
And let it go. Please just let it go.
